What Is a Hernia Mesh Injury?
Hernia mesh is a surgical device used in nine of ten hernia surgeries in the U.S. each year. The mesh comes in various materials, shapes, and sizes to repair different types of hernias.
Physicians attach the mesh to an area surrounding a hernia with stitches, staples, or glue. The mesh allows tissue to grow through the device to strengthen that area of the body.
Surgical mesh reduces the risk of hernia recurrence, but it also has caused serious complications and required removal surgery.
- Mesh migration: The mesh moves from its intended location in the body immediately after surgery or over time. It can lead to pain, hernia recurrence, infections, unusual bleeding, fistulas, and organ perforation.
- Mesh adhesion: Mesh can cause bands of scar-like tissue to form in the body. Adhesions cause organs and tissue to stick together. This tissue may cause severe pain, small bowel obstructions, tissue death, and other health issues.
- Mesh shrinkage (contraction): If the mesh shrinks, it pulls tissue together, which may lead to chronic pain, migration, organ obstruction, infection, and hernia recurrence.
