Toyota Sudden Acceleration Recalls
According to the LA Times, more than 1,000 reports of uncontrolled acceleration in Toyota vehicles have been reported. These situations have resulted in many accidents with severe injuries and at least 19 fatalities.
In response, Toyota recalled eight of its car models that date back to 2002. It announced that it would replace defective gas pedals on more than 4.26 million cars sold with this catastrophic problem.
Toyota initially announced the recall in September 2009. It then notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a tragic accident killed a California Highway Patrolman and his family in October of that year.
What Causes Sudden Acceleration?
Toyota announced that the recalled vehicles would be modified to keep the floor mats from jamming the gas pedal. The situation was allegedly causing the car to accelerate uncontrollably.
Additionally, the recalled cars were fitted with a brake override system that would take over if the gas pedal and brake were pressed simultaneously. Toyota plans on making this a standard feature in future vehicles.
Toyota Models Affected By the Recall
The sudden acceleration phenomenon and recall by Toyota affect the following models and years:
- Toyota Avalon (2005-2010)
- Toyota Camry (2007-2010)
- Toyota Prius (2004-2009)
- Toyota Tacoma (2005-2010)
- Toyota Tundra (2007-2010)
- Lexus ES 350 (2007-2010)
- Lexus IS 250 (2006-2010)
- Lexus IS 350 (2006-2010)
If you have one of these vehicles, you are at risk of unintended acceleration until properly repaired.
Toyota Acceleration Cases and Lawsuits
If you or a loved one were in a crash due to sudden acceleration in your Toyota or Lexus, you might need to file a lawsuit against your car’s manufacturer. There is evidence that Toyota knows it did not produce a safe product. However, you will still have to show that you suffered injuries or losses as a result.
