Fourth of July in the Time of COVID-19: Tips for a Safe Holiday

Written by

July 4th is the first holiday weekend since Governor Wolf lifted the stay-at-home order for a number of counties in Pennsylvania, including Lancaster. Many people are looking forward to celebrating with family and friends; however, surging numbers of COVID-19 infections in some areas of the country serve as a reminder that we need to remain extremely vigilant and cautious. Below are some tips to keep in mind to ensure that you have a safe holiday weekend.

  • Consistent with the CDC’s guidance, whenever you are around people outside of those in your household, social distance and wear a mask.
  •  It is safest to celebrate with those in your household, but if you do decide to have a get-together, host it outdoors, and limit the guest list to a small group of people whom you know and trust. Have hand sanitizer readily available, and regularly clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces. Use (environmentally-friendly) disposable plates, cutlery, and cups, and choose single-serve snacks to minimize the sharing of food. It is also a good idea to have extra masks on hand in case anyone forgets to bring one.
  • Many public fireworks shows may be cancelled this year, as communities try to avoid having events where large crowds will gather. If you plan to use your own fireworks, always follow the instructions on the packaging, and never give fireworks, including sparklers, to children.
  • Health experts are advising people to stay at home, especially given the recent increases in infections, but for those choosing to travel over the July 4th weekend, it is advisable to research and evaluate the conditions in that area. Visit rest stops only when necessary, and make sure to bring hand sanitizer along with you.
