Taking the Flu Seriously

Last year’s flu season was the worst flu season in four decades. The flu caused around 80,000 deaths according to CDC estimates and put another 900,000 in the hospital. Although this year’s flu season is expected to be milder, it is still important. It is especially important for more vulnerable parts of the population such as children and adolescents, pregnant women, health care workers, people with chronic medical conditions, and elderly people to get the flu shot.

Tips for Staying Healthy During Flu Season

  • Get the Flu Vaccine
    • According to the CDC, getting your flu shot before the beginning of November ensures the shot takes full effect before the height of flu season. However, even if you don’t get one by then, it is never too late to get the vaccine.
  • Know the symptoms of the flu
    • Cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue
    • Although many of the symptoms are similar to that of a cold, flu symptoms can be distinguished because they come more suddenly.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with flu
