Since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month each April to increase public awareness and understanding of alcoholism and alcohol-related issues. Below are some statistics related to alcohol misuse:

Alcohol Misuse, By the Numbers

-88,000 deaths are attributable to excessive alcohol use each year, according to the CDC.

-Almost 30 people in the United States die each day in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the CDC. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes.

-One-third of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related.

-One person is injured every two minutes in an alcohol-related crash in the United States, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving

The Risk of Drinking and Driving and Over-Serving Visibly Intoxicated Persons

When someone chooses to drive while impaired, he or she is putting his or her life at risk, as well as the lives of everyone else on the roadway. Throughout the year, and especially during Alcohol Awareness Month, please remember that it is important to protect yourself, as well as others on the roadway, by not drinking and driving.

If you or someone you know has been injured by a drunk driver, Atlee Hall has experience litigating cases against bars, restaurants, and taverns that have overserved people. Under the Pennsylvania Liquor Code, an establishment is prohibited from serving alcohol to a visibly intoxicated person. If a bar or other establishment serves alcohol to someone who is visibly intoxicated and that person injures himself or someone else, the bar or establishment may be responsible for all harms and losses that resulted.
